  • Interviews with Dowd help music history students and rock music history lovers understand what a profound influence audio engineers have had on the sounds we all enjoy. Tom explains, mostly in layman's terms, how he created the sounds that went onto the records and how the artists were 'discovered' by Atlantic, Stax, and other record producers.
  • I just finished watching the DVD call 'Tom Dowd, The Language of Music', and I was pleasantly surprised to see a short clip of Joe Bonomassa in the Atlantic Recording Studios playing a 1960/61 dot neck ES-330 TD. Of all the guitars Joe B. Could have recorded with, here he was playing a 'humble'.

  • This one is a better-than-average biographical doc for a music subject. Helping avoid over-reliance on archival materials, the influential producer and Scorsese's long-lost twin Tom Dowd participates directly in new interviews and tours both his contemporary and old haunts with some nice camerawork. (I did not expect the sweeping handheld moves nor tracking shot of Tom going into the studio!)

I also had no idea he was so deeply involved in the famous jazz, soul, and rock output of Atlantic Records, either. This serves as a sort of dual-doc on that label's history as well. His work on the Manhattan Project and how it gave way to a music career was equally surprising and interesting.

Tom’s legacy reminds that much of our celebrated cultural history is made up of happy accidents, with everyday people following their passions and meeting the opportunities before them.

  • Compelling documentary that really tells a story. It’s incredible the stuff this man has done.
