Quickbooks 2019

You may not even be aware that ‘firewall port assignments’ for QuickBooks (Desktop) 2019 are different, and I am not simply talking about the port numbers. The entire mechanism is different for 2019 because the newest versions of QuickBooks (Desktop) are using ‘dynamic port assignment’ rather than static port ranges.

For years, QuickBooks has used an algorithm for firewall port assignments needed by QuickBooks Desktop products when running in multi-user mode. The algorithm progressively incremented the port assignments within a wide-range of available ports Microsoft defined for the Windows firewall. For example, in 2018 the following ports had to be open for QuickBooks to work properly in multi-user mode: 8019, 56728, 55378-55382 whether you were using a client-server or peer-to-peer network configuration.

In some prior years, there have been port conflicts between QuickBooks and certain Microsoft Operating System components, most notedly Microsoft DNS, which is a Windows Server-related 'Windows service.' But even when Microsoft OS components were not the source of conflict, other programs and services running on the computer hosting QuickBooks could interfere with the QuickBooks network operations by making use of some, or all, of the firewall ports. In severe cases the conflict could even keep the QuickBooks Database Server (a windows service) from starting-up after a controlled, or unexpected shut-down of the computer hosting QuickBooks.

QuickBooks Pro 2019 won't open. It worked fine three days ago. Is there an issue with Windows 10? Intuit's tech support can't find the problem.Modified title from: Windows 10 and QuickBooks. By reseeting my pc. I accidently removed Quickbooks Pro 2019. I installed it again but even though it says Quickbooks Pro 2019. It does not have my current information. It has old information from 2017!! I have my product id. And license number.

To reduce the potential of conflicts of this type, and the associated multi-user networking operations of QuickBooks Desktop, Intuit has changed the way that it allocates firewall ports for the 2019 Desktop QuickBooks products. The new year’s products will now use ‘dynamic port assignment’ to help insure that QuickBooks is given port exclusivity by checking all the other port assignments during installation and selecting only an unused port for QuickBooks operations.

For 2019, the port format for QuickBooks Desktop will be 8019, XXXXX where XXXXX represents the port number specifically assigned (as shown in the illustration below within the ‘red box.’ To facilitate this new functionality, a new ‘Port Monitor’ tab (shown below highlighted in the ‘blue box’) has been added to the QuickBooks Database Server Manager utility.

When the QuickBooks Database Server is installed during either the option of installing QuickBooks (full application) configured for hosting the company files, or during the QuickBooks Database Server (only) option for hosting the company files, part of the new process is to identify and assign an appropriate port number.

Because only the most current version of the QuickBooks Database Server Manager is available to QuickBooks users, despite the fact that installations running multiple-year versions of QuickBooks will have each of the appropriate versions of the actual QuickBooks Database Server (a Windows service) running on their computer, the new ‘Manager’ utility will list the ‘beginning port’ of the applicable port range for each older year of QuickBooks detected. In the above example you will notice that 2016, 2017 and 2018 version of QuickBooks are listed within the Port Monitor tab along with QuickBooks 2019.

When the QuickBooks Database Server Manager is used to ‘scan’ the various (Windows directory) folders containing QuickBooks Company files, which is the default process where .QBW.nd (network descriptor) files are created, a new Server Port assignment is written into the .QBW.nd file so that the QuickBooks application working as a ‘client’ computer will seek to access the QuickBooks Database Server on the designated host computer via the specifically assigned ‘Port Number.’

Because potential issues could arise subsequent to the initial installation of QuickBooks 2019, and the assignment of the Server Port, Intuit has provided a way to re-assign (they call it ‘Renew’) the port assignment; if a previous port assignment become conflicted with some later installed or updated Windows service or other software application attempting to use the same port. (Highlighted within the ‘green box’ in the illustration below.)

In the event that it becomes necessary to ‘Renew’ port assignments, it is also necessary to update all of the respective .QBW.nd files by re-scanning the folders again from the ‘Scan Folders’ tab of the QuickBooks Database Server Manager utility. Because if the Port Number in the ‘Port Monitor’ tab assigned to QuickBooks 2019 does not match the ‘ServerPort’ number in the .QBW.nd files, QuickBooks will not operate properly in a networked environment.

Preliminarily, we here at Insightful Accountant want to make you aware that we have detected that in some cases, a conflict may arise when the new QuickBooks Database Server Manager utility scans older QuickBooks Desktop files. While the ‘ServerPort’ entry in those .QBW.nd files is the ‘Port Number’ for the QuickBooks version reported in the ‘Port Monitor’ display of the QuickBooks Database Server Manager utility, we have noted instances where QuickBooks fails to access the appropriate QuickBooks Database Server. This may be due to a strict limitation of the port assignment (rather than application of the entire port range previously required in older versions of QuickBooks) even if the specific QBDBS ‘Windows service' is running. We will continue our testing on this matter and attempt to keep you advised as soon as we have updated information.
